The opening game of Week 7 College Football season will see a great battle between two Sun Belt foes. The undefeated Appalachian State Mountaineers (4-0; 3-1 ATS) visit the in-form Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (4-1; 5-0 ATS) at Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Both schools are 1-0 in the conference play. When it comes to head-to-head meetings, the Mountaineers have won all their six encounters with the Ragin’ Cajuns, covering the spread on three occasions. The under is 5-1 in that stretch.
Last year, Appy State defeated Louisiana-Lafayette twice. The Mountaineers won 27-17 as 25-point home favorites in October and 30-19 as 17.5-point favorites in the Sun Belt Championship Game at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina.
In their last visit to Cajun Field back in 2016, the Mountaineers won 24-0 as 10.5-point favorites. Now, the Mountaineers are listed as 1-point dogs. The Ragin’ Cajuns went perfect against the spread through their first five games and are favorites to beat the Mountaineers for the first time since 2014.

Both Appalachian State and Louisiana-Lafayette are among the ten most efficient teams in the country. The Mountaineers are scoring 47.0 points per game (5th), while the Ragin’ Cajuns are tallying 44.4 points per contest (9th). Likewise, both teams rely a lot on their rushing.
The Ragin’ Cajuns are racking up the most rushing yards per game in the country (314.0). They are tallying whopping 7.37 yards per carry which are the second-most in the nation right behind the Oklahoma Sooners.
Trey Ragas is leading the way for the Ragin’ Cajuns with 56 carries for 548 yards and six touchdowns. Elijah Mitchell added 67 totes for 402 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior QB Levi Lewis tossed for 980 yards, eight touchdowns, and a couple of picks while completing 64.8% of his passing attempts.
On the other side, the Mountaineers are posting 224.5 rushing yards per game (22nd). Junior Darrynton Evans is a key guy in their backfield with 67 carries for 471 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior QB Zac Thomas threw for 802 yards, seven touchdowns, and a pair of interceptions while completing 71.9% of his passes.
Interestingly, both Appalachian State and Louisiana-Lafayette have struggled against rushing thus far. The Mountaineers are surrendering 165.0 rushing yards per game (80th in the country). The Ragin’ Cajuns are allowing 158.6 rushing yards per contest (72nd).
Therefore, the bookies expect to see a proper high-scoring affair. Although rushing eats the clock, it seems like neither of these two teams is capable of slowing down the opposite ground game.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 56-37 victory to Coastal Carolina. Over their last three outings, the Mountaineers couldn’t limit their rivals below 31 points. In Week 2, they allowed 41 points to Charlotte at home.
The line on the team totals is identical on both Appalachian State and Louisiana-Lafayette at 34.5 points. After a 38-28 defeat to Mississippi State in the opener, the Ragin’ Cajuns haven’t allowed more than 25 points to their opponents.
This one should be a real firecracker. Although the betting trends are clearly suggesting the visitors and under, the stats from 2019 are pointing to the other direction. And, the Ragin’ Cajuns will be highly motivated to finally beat the Mountaineers. The total has gone over in four of Appy State’s last five games and five of Ragin’ Cajuns’ last six games.
Appalachian State’s defense has been an issue since Week 2. On the other hand, the Mountaineers surely possess offensive firepower to damage the Ragin’ Cajuns D. Consider taking the over on 72.5-point alternative line at +115 or go with the hosts to score 35 or more points.
