  • Washington Nationals vs. Houston Astros

The Washington Nationals and Houston Astros meet each other for the first time since 2017. Interestingly, the Nationals have won 14 of the last 16 head-to-head matchups and are 8-1 in their last nine visits to Houston.

However, the Nationals made it to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. On the other side, the Astros are at the biggest stage for the third time, looking for their second championship in three years. Back in 2017, the Astros outlasted the Dodgers in seven games.

I’m backing the Astros to open the 2019 World Series with a victory in front of the home fans. The reason is simple, and it’s called Gerrit Cole. The right-hander has been untouchable over the last few months. Cole won all his three starts this postseason with a 0.40 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP.

Furthermore, since July 12, the Astros have won 16 straight games with Cole on the mound. Gerrit is 3-2 in six starts against the Nationals in his career, tallying a 2.92 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.

On the other side, the Nationals will counter with Max Scherzer. The right-hander is 2-0 in four starts this postseason, recording a 1.80 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP. The Nats won all his four starts. Max is 3-1 in his six starts and a relief appearance against the Astros in a career.

Both starters should last for six or seven innings. The Astros arguably have an advantage over the Nationals’ bullpen. If you want to get greater wages, take the under on the totals. I would avoid a run line, expecting to see a tight battle.

  • Vancouver Canucks vs. Detroit Red Wings

The Canucks (5-3-0) have won five of their last six games including a 3-2 win at the Rangers in their previous outing. They’ve scored all three goals in the 1st period and barely escaped with a victory.

On the other side, the Red Wings (3-5-0) are riding a four-game losing streak following a 2-1 defeat at Edmonton. Still, their previous three games came on the road, and the Red Wings are surely happy to get back on the home ice.

Detroit is 5-3 in its last eight home contests and 5-2 in the previous seven encounters with Vancouver. The Canucks have won only one of their last six road meetings with the Eastern Conference. Also, they are 5-14 in the previous 19 showings on the road.

Therefore, I think the Red Wings have a nice opportunity to snap their losing streak. I’m backing the hosts to upset the odds here.

  • Los Angeles Lakers vs. Los Angeles Clippers

There’s no better clash to open the NBA season than this one. We’ll see two strongest contenders to win the championship taking on each other, and the Lakers are listed as slight favorites. The Lakers will miss Kyle Kuzma, while the Clippers will be without Paul George.

Both teams will want to make a statement here. I expect to see a tight clash decided by a few possessions down the stretch. Last season, they split the series, and the previous three encounters were decided by eight or fewer points.

It’s hard to say who will in this one. I think the Lakers will satisfy the odds on the back of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. If you want to take a risk, go with any team to win by five or fewer points at +170 odds.
